Rome - Mr Giuliano Amato, appointed Prime Minister of Italy's 58th post-war government on Tuesday, last night won a confidence vote in the Chamber of Deputies by 319 to 298 votes, writes Paddy Agnew from Rome. Although Mr Amato's final winning margin was larger than expected, the close-run nature of the vote was shown when some deputies indicated they would vote for the government only after hearing Mr Amato's closing speech. Mr Amato can now expect to win a second confidence motion in the Senate next week and lead his centreleft coalition through to the next scheduled general election next April.
