The Israeli army said today its forces demolished or badly damaged 56 buildings during a six-day operation in a refugee camp in the southern Gaza Strip which sparked an international outcry.

"About 56 structures were demolished," Major-General Dan Harel, head of the army's southern command, told reporters, adding that number also included buildings that were badly damaged.

He also said Israeli forces had completely withdrawn from the camp.

Some buildings were damaged when weapons-smuggling tunnels were blown up and others were positions used by gunmen or were razed to avoid booby-traps, he said.
