Unidentified assailants in a passing car shot dead an Israeli pedestrian in Jerusalem today in what police described as a "terrorist attack".

Israeli police said the car immediately sped away from the scene in Jerusalem's French Hill neighbourhood, which is on land Israel occupied in the 1967 Middle East war.

The pedestrian, a young man, was rushed by ambulance to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital but arrived dead, a spokesman there said.

French Hill, close to the West Bank, has been hit before by violence related to the three-year old Palestinian uprising. In May 2003, a Palestinian militant disguised as a religious Jews killed seven people aboard a bus in the district.
