Jerusalem - Israel is angry with the EU for characterising its capital, Jerusalem, as a separate entity, not part of Israel at all, and not subject to Israeli government control, writes David Horovitz.

The definition of Jerusalem as Corpus Separatum was contained in a letter sent to the Israeli Foreign Ministry a few days ago by Mr Theodor Wallau, the ambassador here of Germany, which currently holds the EU presidency, rejecting an Israeli demand that EU politicians put a stop to their practice of meeting Palestinian leaders in East Jerusalem.

Israel claims sovereignty throughout Jerusalem, having made its capital in the west of the city since the state was founded in 1948, and annexed the Old City and eastern sector after their capture from Jordan in the 1967 war. There could be no compromise on Jerusalem, Israel's Prime Minister, Mr Benjamin Netanyahu, said yesterday, castigating the ambass ador's letter. "Jerusalem is the heart and soul of the Jewish people."
