Irish youngster races to Newcastle victory

Irish youngster Colm Rooney timed his run to perfection to win the Under-20 Great North Mile in Newcastle today.

Meanwhile, Ireland's Geraldine Hendricken finished fourth in the Women's Mile with Commonwealth Games 1500 metres gold medallist Kelly Holmes brushing aside her injury worries of the last two months to retain her title.

Holmes won in a time of four minutes 32.10 seconds, an improvement of eight seconds on the performance she set 12 months ago.

She defeated a number of the world's top athletes including Sureyya Ayhan, the Turk who won the European title in August and has been unbeaten throughout the track season.

In third place was Tatyana Tomashova of Russia who clocked 4min 35.70secs behind Ayhan who crossed the finishing line in 4min 34.40secs.
