The Irish Timeshas won three awards at the seventh annual ESB National Media Awards.
Mr Sean MacConnell took the News and Current Affairs award, Ms Maev-Ann Wren won the Analysis and Comment section and Ms Eileen Battersby came first in the Arts category.
The Minister for Public Enterprise Mrs Mary O'Rourke, and the ESB Chairman, Mr Tadgh O'Donoghue, made the presentations this afternoon.
The over-all winner this year was the editor of The Sunday TribuneMr Matt Cooper who accepted his fifth media award since winning young journalist of the year at the start of his career. He was presented with a specially commissioned trophy and a cheque for £2000.
Other notable winners among a total of 28 television, radio and print journalists were Ms Ursula Halligan (Magill, Political Editor, TV3) - Business and Finance award, Ms Jody Corcoran (Sunday Independent) and Mr Fergal Bowers (Irish Health.com)- campaigning and social issues award, and Mr Tony Galvin (Tuam Herald) - Provincial Press.
The Irish Examineragain produced the Young Journalist of the Year Award with Mr Carl O'Brien receiving a £1000 cheque for the second year in a row.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr O’Donoghue spoke of the part played by investigative journalists in bringing scandals to light, and in particular their contribution to the ongoing tribunals of inquiry.
"I commend all of you here today for the work you are doing and urge you to continue to take risks, not only for your careers, but also for the healthy future of democracy in Ireland and abroad", he said.
