THE BODY of an Irish tourist who went missing in Stockholm more than a week ago has been recovered from the harbour close to where he was last seen, Swedish police confirmed last night.

John Aherne (32), an accountant from Wicklow town, had been missing since leaving a restaurant to smoke a cigarette on the night of March 15th.

His body was found by members of the Swedish Coast Guard shortly before midday yesterday close to the quayside at Norra Hammarbyhamnen on Stockholm's south island, police spokesman Lars Bröns told The Irish Times last night.

"The body was found in a straight line down to the water 300m from the restaurant where Mr Aherne was last seen," Mr Bröns said.

Police believe Mr Aherne made his way to the quayside and accidentally fell into the water. There had never been any suspicion of foul play, Mr Bröns added.

Mr Aherne was in the Swedish capital to celebrate the St Patrick's holiday weekend with his friend Karl Lambert.

The two men had a few drinks together at a city centre bar before Mr Aherne decided to go home.

He stopped off to have a drink at a restaurant on the ground floor of Mr Lambert's apartment building. He was last seen leaving his coat and phone in the bar to step outside for a cigarette.
