Dublin - It has emerged that a journalist originally from Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, was one of the survivors of the attack by the Taliban which killed three European journalists last weekend in Afghanistan, writes Patrick Tierney.

Paul McGeough was one of 20 journalists in an armoured car which was hit by a rocket propelled grenade as the vehicle travelled with the Northern Alliance army through Taliban territory.

In an article in the Australian newspaper, the Sydney Morning Herald, yesterday, Mr McGeough described how the three journalists were blown out of the vehicle, shot and their bodies "looted of all valuables". The remaining 17 survivors of the attack escaped with minor cuts and bruises.
