A forgotten Irish doctor who was the first to discover the process that led to the hypodermic syringe was honoured last night in Dublin, writes Ronan McGreevy.

Dr Francis Rynd is credited with first making this kind of injection possible by intravenously administering morphine to a patient at the Meath hospital in Dublin in May 1844.
