The Irish headmaster of a British school in Brazil was found dead yesterday morning in his apartment in the country's biggest city, Sao Paulo, with his hands and legs bound, but no signs of robbery, police said.
"The man was assassinated but nothing was stolen from the flat, according to the maid. He was all tied up and had some wounds on his body, of yet unknown origin," a duty police officer said.
"Our special homicide department is working on the case, but so far there are no suspects. The Irish consulate has been contacted via the school where he worked for body repatriation procedures."
Police identified the man as Michael Thomas Casey McCann (57) headmaster of the prestigious St Paul's School. A single man, he is believed to have come from the Republic and lived in Brazil for about 10 years.
