The chief executive of the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has been appointed by the European Commission to the board of the newly-formed European Food Safety Authority.
Dr Patrick Wall will remain in his position on the FSAI during the six-year term of his position on the 14-member board.
The new food safety authority will provide independent scientific advice to support EU policies on food safety.
The brief of the new body will cover all stages of food production and supply from production right through to the supply of food to consumers.

It will be involved in assessing risks related to the food chain and provide information to the general public about food risks.
