The IRFU today announced the cancellation of the Interprovincial games between Ulster and Munster, and, Leinster and Connacht due to fixture congestion in recent months.
Dr Liam Hennessy, director of fitness to the IRFU, called off the matches, due to be played on December 28th, because of the re-scheduled Six Nations campaign and the success of provincial teams in the Celtic League.
Many of Ireland’s internationals were involved in the Celtic League final at the weekend where Leinster defeated Munster not to mention Ireland’s defeat in a friendly against the All-Blacks last month.
Although Hennessy feels rest and recovery is necessary over the coming weeks to prepare for the New Six Nations campaign, the coaches of Ulster and Munster have agreed to play a friendly fixture on the same date at Ravenhill.
"Whilst hugely disappointing for players and fans alike, the match will give Coach Alan Solomons a chance to give his full team a run out prior to the Heineken Cup pool games in January," said Michael Reid, CEO of the Ulster Branch.
No decision has been made on whether the Leinster and Connacht game will also be played as a friendly.
