An employee at Iraq's diplomatic mission in Moscow has gone missing, an embassy spokesman said today.

The man (48), an Iraqi national named to a technical posting who did not have diplomatic status, walked out of the embassy on Saturday and has not been seen since, the spokesman said.

He said the man could have been a victim of street crime or a racist attack.

The ITAR-TASS news agency quoted a diplomat saying: "He [the missing man] only arrived in Moscow with his family not long ago, and he may not have known that some parts of the capital are riddled with crime".

Diplomats from several non-European countries complained earlier this year about a rising tide of racist actions against their nationals by skinheads and other groups in Moscow.
