Defending champion David Toms had an inspired day with the putter to take the first round lead in the $3.5 million US PGA Michelob Championship.
Toms, who won his first major title in August's PGA Championship, fired a seven-under par 64 to seize a one-stroke lead in a round that only required 22 putts.
"I can't remember the last time I did anything like that, even on some really low rounds," said Toms, whose career-low round is 63. "I don't know that I have ever had that many putts".
Shigeki Maruyama, J.J. Henry, Jimmy Green, Michael Muehr and Neal Lancaster each fired a 66 to share second. Bryce Molder leads a group of four players on 67.
