Eames row with Nigerian primate

Church of Ireland primate Archbishop Robin Eames has said he is "very disturbed by any speculation around the role that money may play in determining outcomes" to the current debate in Anglicanism over same sex relationships, writes Patsy McGarry.

The archbishop was speaking in the context of an open letter sent to him this week by the primate of the Nigerian Church, Archbishop Peter Akinola.

Nigerian Anglicans have taken a strongly conservative position in opposition to same sex relationships.

In his letter Archbishop Akinola wrote it had been reported that Archbishop Eames allegedly said he was "quite certain that some of us [African Anglicans] have been bought . . . Such irresponsible accusations are outrageous, uncharitable and untrue".

In a statement yesterday Archbishop Eames said: "I in no way question the sincerity and integrity of the leaders of the global south. As they are well aware, I have personally endeavoured at all times to maintain and understand the integrity of their argument.

"I categorically state I have never believed that any financial offer was accepted by any of those who represent the global south on any other than terms of Christian outreach. I have communicated this response to Archbishop Akinola this morning."

TV and computer recycling centre

A specialist centre for the recycling of cathode ray tubes from TVs and computer screens was opened in Louth yesterday, writes Fiona Gartland.

Minister for the Environment Dick Roche launched the new facility at Tenure Business Park in Monasterboice. It is the only one of its kind in Ireland and will also recycle fluorescent tubes, batteries and printer cartridges.

Specialist equipment from Sweden has been installed and commissioned to dismantle and recycle the waste.

The new facility will provide a complete "cradle to grave" solution for the recovery of cathode ray tubes as well as other redundant computer equipment.

Louth County Council has provided a waste licence to The Recycling Village company to operate the centre.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister said that the new facility is a perfect example of the committed approach being adopted by business in implementing the EU Directive on waste electrical and electronic equipment.
