Gardai in Tuam have confirmed that they are investigating allegations that a former religious brother sexually abused several young boys in the north Galway area over a continuous period up to the early 1970s. They said a file on the matter was near completion and should be with the DPP within weeks. The investigation began last year when a former pupil of a national school made a complaint to the Garda that he had been sexually abused, and named the man at the centre of the latest investigation as being responsible.

As a result of further inquiries several other boys who attended the school also made similar complaints against the former brother, who has since left the order and is now married with children.

The former brother is believed to be denying the accusations.
