London - Downing Street last night extended the inquiry into Mr Blair's leaked memo after another note, this time from one of his closest advisers, was sent to the press.
The memo, from Mr Philip Gould, is expected to appear in the Sun and the Times today. It is understood to address similar concerns that Labour was failing to getting its message across to voters on crime, asylum, defence and the family.
A Downing Street spokesman said that the timing of the leak was a clear sign that those responsible wished to drive news of Chancellor Gordon Brown's multi-billion pound spending review off the front pages.
The leak is the third time that Mr Gould's private communications have found their way, unauthorised, into the press.
According to the Times, the memo was sent to only four people - Mr Blair, Mr Brown, Mr Mandelson and Mr Blair's press secretary, Mr Alastair Campbell.
