The investigation into the murder of a German student who was stabbed outside his apartment block last month is nearing completion, the Dublin coroner heard yesterday.

At the opening of the inquest at Dublin Coroner’s Court into the death of Thomas Heinrich (22) from Munich, Det Insp Sean Campbell said a file was being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions and was at an “advanced stage”.

Mr Heinrich, a media student who was living at the Herberton Apartments on St Anthony’s Road in Rialto, Dublin 8, died after he was stabbed in an altercation on December 1st.

The stabbing took place early in the morning. Mr Heinrich’s friend, another German student, was injured. Gardaí believe that the two men were on a balcony in the apartment block when they exchanged words with two local teenagers walking by. In a later confrontation on the street, the two teenagers produced knives and the students were stabbed.
