A bull in Britain which showed possible symptoms of foot-and mouth disease is not infected, initial test results showed today.

Speaking at Higher Redgate Farm, St Cleer, near Liskeard in Cornwall today, British government vet Ms Sue Potter said initial blood test results had proved negative.

"We have done a full inspection of all the stock here today and everything is looking very well - including the infected animal," said Ms Potter, who works for the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

The results were released by the Institute for Animal Health Laboratory at Pirbright, Surrey. A second set of results is due to be released later today.

Final confirmation of the animal's condition will be released within the next four days.

Ms Potter said livestock movement restrictions would remain in place across a five mile zone surrounding Higher Redgate Farm.

"We can't afford to relax until we get the final laboratory results through. I would encourage all farmers with stock not to forget their bio-security or the 8km movement restrictions."
