Jakarta - Indonesia has expressed optimism that peace talks which began yesterday between Muslim and Christian factions would help curb three years of violence in eastern Sulawesi island that have resulted in more than 1,000 deaths.

The meeting is taking place as Indonesia tightens security to prevent the kind of sectarian violence that erupted last Christmas Eve, when a string of bomb blasts near churches killed 19 people.
