JAKARTA - Thirty nine people will be tried this month in Indonesia's remote Irian Jaya province for taking part in riots in March in which four people were killed, the Suara Pembaruan evening newspaper said yesterday.

Meanwhile an MP of the Democracy Party of Indonesia accused the government of engineering a split within the party in its attempts to depose its leader, Ms Megawati Sukarno, daughter of Indonesia's first president. In Java and Sumatra military commanders have banned activities in their territories of a new political party launched by a sacked MP, reports said.
