Gun in airport alert filled with cement

The gun which sparked a security alert at Dublin airport on Sunday was a replica with a barrel filled with cement, writes Paul Cullen.

A man who was detained after the firearm was discovered in his hand luggage during security screening was released without charge yesterday.

Gardaí confirmed he was released from custody and a file was being sent to the DPP.

The passenger, a 25-year-old Irish man, was due to board a charter flight to Egypt with tour company First Choice on Sunday.

It is understood the man says he did not put the firearm in his baggage, and has suggested he may have been the victim of a prank.

Fatal motorcycle collision in Kildare

A man was killed in Monasterevin, Co Kildare, at about 4pm yesterday when his motorcycle was in collision with the central median on the northbound lane of the M7.

A female pillion passenger was taken to Naas General Hospital after the accident, where she was described as critical last night. The identity of the dead man was not being released by gardaí last night until all relatives had been informed. Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact gardaí in Monasterevin at 045 525322.

Meanwhile gardaí have named the woman killed in a car crash on Sunday near Mullingar, Co Westmeath, as Ann Allen (85), from Slanemore, Mullingar. She was the driver of one of two cars which collided on the N4 at the Downs near Mullingar.

Woman killed in North collision

A 40-year-old woman died last night following a collision in Northern Ireland. The victim was involved in the collision on the Cromore Road, Port Stewart, shortly before 3pm. She was from the Coleraine area, not far from the accident scene.

Limerick college is renamed

The Mid West Business Institute (MWBI) in Limerick has integrated with Griffith College in Dublin and will be renamed Griffith College Limerick. It will continue to be based at the Old Town Hall building in Rutland Street.

Griffith College is the largest independent third-level college in Ireland and provides accredited training to over 8,000 full and part-time students, annually. Griffith College now has campuses in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and overseas campuses in Karachi and Moscow.

Start of Cork music festival

Thousands of folk music enthusiasts are expected to travel to Cork for the 27th annual Beamish festival which gets under way this evening and continues for five days.

The Beamish Cork Folk Festival has long been known for its eclecticism, hosting diverse international artists such as Emmylou Harris, Billy Bragg, David Gray, as well as home-grown musicians The Chieftains, Christy Moore and Paul Brady.

Festival chairman Jim Walsh says the programme has a distinctly home-grown flavour after the "dizzying heights of 2005".

A special tribute to Seán Ó Se featuring Peadar Ó Riada and Cor Chuil Aodha will be one of the highlights of this year's festival.

Launch of Davitt stamp

A 48c stamp marking the centenary of the death of Michael Davitt was launched by Noel Dempsey, Minister for Communications, at the Michael Davitt Museum in Straide, Co Mayo, yesterday.

An Post chairwoman Margaret McGinley said it was most fitting that the launch should take place in Staide's Davitt museum, formerly the church where Michael Davitt was christened in 1846.
