Woman in custody after cannabis haul

A woman was in custody last night following the seizure at Dublin airport of almost 16 kilograms of cannabis, worth approximately €200,000.

The herbal cannabis was allegedly concealed in the luggage of the woman (58), who is from west Africa and had arrived from Johannesburg.

The seizure was made during a joint operation involving gardaí and customs officers who are targeting drugs importation from Africa and eastern Europe. Immigration officers also assisted in the operation.

The woman was being detained at Santry Garda station under the provisions of section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act.

Teen held over death released

A 19-year-old man who was arrested in connection with the death of a 29-year-old man last week has been released without charge.

The teenager was the sixth individual to be arrested in relation to the death of Darren McKeown, who was assaulted in Drogheda, Co Louth in the early hours of St Stephen's Day.

Mr McKeown, of Donore, Co Meath, died in hospital three days after the assault. A file is to be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The assault occurred near Rowan Heights Estate, Drogheda, following a party that Mr McKeown had attended in the area.
