"Two men were arrested who were in the car and a loaded Glock pistol was recovered. The car was confirmed to be stolen."

The men are being detained under section 30 of the Offences Against The State Act at Henry Street and Mayorstone Garda Stations.

Three rescued from Galway Bay

Three men who were close to hypothermia were recovering in hospital last night after their rescue by Galway inshore lifeboat, writes Lorna Siggins.

The three men had been reported missing at about 4.30pm yesterday when a rigid inflatable they were travelling in from Renville near Oranmore to New Quay in Co Clare failed to arrive. Weather conditions were good at the time.

The RNLI Galway Bay lifeboat was on a training exercise nearby in Kinvara when it was asked to respond and began searching the southern shores of Galway Bay. All three men were discovered in the water 10 minutes later near Kilcolgan Point in a very distressed state, and it is understood that they had fallen overboard.

They had been in the water for about two hours and two of them were losing consciousness when located. The lifeboat crew had to administer oxygen and first aid. Two ambulances met the lifeboat, and two of the three had to be taken off on stretchers. The third man could walk to the ambulance.

All three were reported to be making a good recovery at University College Hospital, Galway (UCHG) last night. It is understood that the boat was recovered later by a local fisherman.

Galway lifeboat's launching authority Mike Swann paid tribute to the lifeboat crew for their response, including administration of first aid. "But for the intense training that our people have undergone, this could have been a tragedy, with much more serious consequences," he said.

Older artists for town hall show

A group in their 80s who are clients of the HSE-run Áras Mhuire Nursing Home in Tuam, Co Galway, will stage an art exhibition of their works in Tuam Town Hall from tomorrow.

The exhibition is part of the national Bealtaine Festival celebrating creativity in older age. All the artists expect to be present for the official launch by Galway city's Tom Kenny, of the world-famous Kenny Art Gallery.

Most of the artists live at the HSE home, while others are weekly day care patients there.

"I look forward to every Thursday when I can come here and paint," said pensioner Maura Daly from Woodquay, Co Galway.
