Irish church leaders to visit Holy Land

The leaders of Ireland's four main churches are to visit the Holy Land next week to "offer Christian hope" in a situation where continuing hostilities are causing increased hardship for ordinary people.

The Catholic Primate, Cardinal Seán Brady; Rev Roy Cooper, President of the Methodist Church; Dr John Finlay, Presbyterian Moderator; and the Church of Ireland Primate, Archbishop Alan Harper, say they will bring a message of peace from the churches in Ireland.

The leaders will meet local church leaders and representatives from the Palestinian Authority and Israeli Government.

Woman cyclist killed in Dublin

Gardaí at Cabra, Dublin, are investigating a fatal road traffic collision that happened shortly before midday yesterday on the Nephin Road. A 52-year-old female cyclist was fatally injured when she collided with a truck. Witnesses are asked to contact gardaí at Cabra on 01-6667400.

Separately yesterday, the 12-year-old French girl who died following a road crash near Louisburgh, Co Mayo, on Tuesday evening has been named as Pauline Kahn, a native of Paris.

Man (54) dies in house fire

Gardaí in Galway are investigating the death of a 54-year-old man in a house fire in the city yesterday evening. He was named as Tommy Sweeney, a resident of Castlepark. Gardaí believe he was in the house on his own when the fire occurred at about 5.30pm.

TB case in Cork school detected

A case of TB in a Cork city school has been notified to the public health department of the Health Service Executive. The HSE said it would begin screening those in close contact with the person diagnosed with the disease. HSE public health doctors were liaising with the school and with the parents of pupils.

Shots fired in Limerick

Gardaí at Roxboro Road, Limerick are investigating a shooting incident that occurred at approximately 4pm yesterday on Hyde Avenue in the Ballinacurra Weston area of Limerick city. A number of shots were fired at a man, who is in his early 40s, inflicting injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. He was receiving medical treatment at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital Dooradoyle.

Financial adviser remanded on bail

A financial adviser was further remanded on bail on 10 counts of money laundering when he made his third appearance in court yesterday following an investigation by gardaí into the Northern Bank robbery in 2004. Timothy Cunningham (59), Woodbine Lodge, Farran, Co Cork, was back before Cork District Court on 10 charges of money laundering in 2004 and 2005.
