Emergency surgery for stabbed man

Gardaí in Navan are investigating a serious stabbing which left a man in his 20s needing emergency surgery.

It is believed the man, originally from Lithuania, was part of a group who travelled to a house in Abbeylands Lane in Navan yesterday morning.

There was an altercation during which the man was stabbed.

It is believed he was then taken to Our Lady’s Hospital in Navan by the men he travelled with.

The car they were in, a Renault Megane, was found burnt out on the Slane road a short time later.

Two men were helping gardaí with inquiries, but had not been arrested.

GP acquitted of dangerous driving

A jury yesterday acquitted a GP of a charge of dangerous driving causing death, following a five-day trial at Galway Circuit Criminal Court. Dr Devi Chalikonda (50), the Ashes, Cnoc an Glas, Spiddal, had denied a charge of dangerous driving which caused the death of Eileen O’Halloran (67) at Cregboy, Claregalway, on August 28th, 2007. Martin Giblin SC, defending, said Dr Chalikonda had suffered an acute attack of vertigo and become extremely ill. She could not remember anything immediately prior to or after the time when Mrs O’Halloran was fatally injured.

18 months' jail for stolen cheques

The owner of an Afro-Caribbean shop who attempted to cash stolen cheques to the value of €14,200 at three north Dublin post offices has been jailed for 18 months at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Adewole Adekunle (38), from Nigeria, with an address at Chipping Terrace, Ongar Village, pleaded guilty to using a false instrument and possession of a stolen cheque at Castleknock Post Office and Mulhuddart Post Office on March 14th, 2007.

Ruling on sperm donor expected

The Supreme Court will rule today on a landmark case in which a gay friend of a lesbian couple who donated his sperm to one of them, resulting in the birth of a boy, is seeking guardianship of and access to the child, now aged three.

The five-judge court last year heard the man’s appeal against a High Court decision that the welfare of the child was best served by remaining with the lesbian couple and by the man having no guardianship or access. Judgment was reserved.
