Woman’s death not treated as suspicious

Gardaí said the death of a woman in Dún Laoghaire last weekend is not being treated as suspicious, writes Tim O’Brien.

The body of Leanne Merrigan (28) was discovered shortly after 11pm on Saturday night in Bentley House, a care centre which provides accommodation for the homeless.

Shortly before 5am on Sunday, a man in his early 30s was arrested in connection with the investigation. He was detained for a number of hours at Dún Laoghaire Garda station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

A postmortem was carried out and the results delivered to gardaí yesterday.

The man was released without charge and it is understood a file is being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Protest over levy abd cutbacks

Siptu members who work for Meath County Council marched in Navan yesterday, in protest of public service cutbacks and the pension levy.

More than 130 civil servants staged the lunchtime protest, marching from Beechmount shopping centre in the town to the county hall.

Outside Navan County Hall, Siptu branch organiser Ramon O’Reilly said: “While we welcome the renewed talks between the social partners and the Government, we are continuing our campaign of protests to ensure that any proposals that emerge are based on equity and fairness, and on the 10-point plan proposed by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions.”

Aer Lingus Knock service welcomed

Business and community interests in the west and northwest have welcomed the return of Aer Lingus, after an absence of 10 years, to Ireland West Airport Knock.

Daily flights by the airline from Knock to and from London Gatwick began yesterday when an inaugural flight landed at the Co Mayo facility. Business interests in the west and northwest are delighted with the new connection.

Knock airport chairman Liam Scollan said the new route could result in an additional 100,000 passengers using the airport annually.

Funeral of man injured in fall

The funeral is to take place tomorrow of a man who was critically injured when jumping from the third floor of a burning house and subsequently died.

Kevin Kiely (35), Limerick, sustained head injuries as a result of the fall and died on Sunday at Cork University Hospital. He had jumped from his apartment in a bid to escape a blaze that broke out at North Mall in Cork city centre at about midnight last Wednesday.
