Man and woman held over murder

A man and a woman in their mid-20s were arrested yesterday in connection with the murder of David Lynch (26) whose body was found earlier this week on waste ground in north Dublin.

The two, reportedly arrested at a Dublin city centre hotel, were detained for questioning at Coolock and Swords Garda stations under Section 50 of The Criminal Justice Act.

Mr Lynch, who had been shot three times in the head, was discovered at 4pm on Monday in an area near Darndale. A father of one with addresses in Darndale and Ballymun, he was a known drug dealer who was wounded in a shooting in Ballymun in 2006.

Five in custody after shooting

Five people were in Garda custody last night following a shooting in Co Tipperary which gardaí believe may be linked to an internal dispute in a Limerick criminal gang.

A man in his 20s suffered a gunshot wound to his leg at 3.30pm yesterday at Glen Court, Emly, Co Tipperary.

A second man suffered a stab wound to his back during the course of the same incident which gardaí believe may be linked to a falling out between members of the Keane criminal gang based in Limerick city.

It is understood that members of the gang travelled to Co Tipperary to target one individual when retaliation occurred.

Five people aged in their late teens and early 20s were arrested at around 5pm on the Ballysimon Road on the outskirts of Limerick city.

One of those arrested has close links to the family of murdered Limerick crime figure Kieran Keane.

A 20-year-old youth from Limerick city and also connected to the same criminal gang was being held at Roxboro Garda station. Three others arrested as part of the same operation were taken to Garda stations in Tipperary town and Clonmel.

Ecstasy-type drug criminalised

A drug which has been sold as “legal” ecstasy has now been declared controlled and criminalised, Minister for Health Mary Harney has announced.

Benzylpiperazine, or BZP, is a relatively new synthetic psychotropic (mood altering) substance has been openly on sale in “head stores” in Dublin and elsewhere for a number of years. The best estimate in 2006 is that there were 14 such outlets in the State. The drug has various street names including: A2, Benny Bear, Legal E, Legal X, party pills or piperazine.

Ms Harney declared BZP a controlled substance under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977, which means that its possession or sale is now a criminal offence.

Offences would need referendum

Legislation that would make teachers, coaches or other figures of authority over children guilty in all cases if they had sex with a minor will need a referendum, an Oireachtas committee has been told.

The committee on the protection of children has been given an extra six months to produce its report.

Rescue after boat runs out of fuel

Five people were rescued last night after the boat they had taken on a sight-seeing excursion ran out of fuel off the Clare coast between the island of Inis Óir and Doolin.

The 20ft boat on which the five were travelling was 1km off the Clare coast when it ran out of fuel at about 6.30pm.

Councillor and campaigner dies

Independent Dundalk county councillor and anti- nuclear campaigner Dr Mary Grehan died yesterday after a long illness. Dr Grehan, a GP and campaigner against nuclear power, an interest sparked by her involvement in a study that suggested a fire at the former Windscale nuclear plant in Wales had caused a cluster of Down Syndrome cases among young women in Dundalk.
