Labour 'can lead' a government

Labour leader Eamon Gilmore has said it is credible to talk of his party leading a government.

Speaking on Saturday at the Tom Johnson summer school in Galway, he said the party had won a quarter of the seats in the European elections.

“Indeed, if Labour can be the biggest party in Dublin, as we are now, then we have the potential to grow and develop both in the capital, and all over the country, and to become the leading party in a new government,” he continued.

Coast Guard sent to tourist vessel

The Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard was called yesterday to assist a passenger boat which lost power in one of its engines while sightseeing in the vicinity of the Cliffs of Moher in Co Clare.

The boat, with 10 passengers on board, had left Liscannor earlier and made its way by Hags Head to the cliffs when one of its two engines failed. The boat was able to operate on the other engine, but Coast Guard teams from Doolin were sent to accompany the boat back to Liscannor.

Helicopter search for Donegal man

A Coast Guard helicopter and a lifeboat were last night searching the estuary of the river Erne in Ballyshannon, Co Donegal, for a 34-year-old local man who was reportedly seen falling into the water from a bridge in the town centre.

Malin Head Coast Guard station said it received a call at 7.48pm and immediately alerted the Coast Guard helicopter based at Strandhill, Co Sligo, and the Bundoran lifeboat.

Huberman among new tax-free artists

Actor Amy Huberman is among artists newly granted tax-free status by the Revenue Commissioners.

Huberman, the fiancee of Ireland rugby captain Brian O’Driscoll, has been granted the exemption on earnings from her debut novel, Hello Heartbreak.

She is included in a new list of 81 additions for tax exemption along with 25 other writers, 25 painters and photographers, 14 musicians, nine sculptors and seven scriptwriters.

Two injured in traffic incident

Two men were taken to hospital last night after they were pinned between two vintage cars in Donegal town.

The incident happened in Quay Street when one car moved off from its parked position and pinned the men, one in his late 60s and the other in his 70s, against a second parked vehicle.

The older man suffered a broken leg.

The cars had been participating in a parade in the town during its weekend summer festival.
