Boy on murder charge served with evidence

17-year-old boy charged with the murder of a man in Dublin last summer was served with a book of evidence yesterday and has been sent forward for trial to the Central Criminal Court.

The teenager, who cannot be identified because he is a juvenile, had been charged on December 24th with the murder of 35-year-old David Rooney, at Clonmacnoise Road, in Crumlin, Dublin, on July 2nd last year.

Judge Ann Ryan heard that the DPP consented for the case to be returned for trial to the Central Criminal Court.

Slander action settled

A Co Limerick landowner has settled his High Court action alleging he was slandered by his neighbour, a British Peer.

Yesterday, the court was told John O’Gorman (67) a farmer from Doneen, Patrickswell, Co Limerick had resolved his action against William Harrington, the Earl of Harrington, the Glen, Ballingarry, Co Limerick.

While the full terms of the settlement are confidential, in a statement read to the court Mr Harrington accepted that an allegation of profiting illegally against Mr O’Gorman was “entirely untrue” and also expressed regret the case “had damaged relations with a good neighbour”.

Bus driver’s widow gets €475,000

The widow of a bus driver who died some weeks after suffering injuries when he was crushed between two buses has secured €475,000 in settlement of High Court proceedings.

Mary Murray, of Huntstown Avenue, Dublin, took the action arising from the death of her husband Martin (50) nearly a month after the accident in November 2000. The settlement was made by Dublin Bus without admission of liability.

Forensic evidence at murder trial

A jury at the Central Criminal Court has heard evidence from forensic scientists in relation to samples of blood taken from the scene of an alleged murder.

Brian Rattigan (28), Cooley Rd, Drimnagh, Dublin, has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Declan Gavin (21), Mourne Rd, Drimnagh, at Crumlin Rd, Crumlin on August 25th, 2001.

The trial resumes on Friday morning.

Liquidator to wind up Voice group

A liquidator has been appointed to wind up the Voice newspaper group of which millionaire entrepreneur Niall Mellon is a major investor.

Creditors attended a meeting in Dublin yesterday at which Kieran Wallace of KPMG was appointed liquidator to both Kilkenny Newspapers Ltd and Voice Provincial Newspapers.

Boy (12) hit by bus in Wicklow

A 12-year-old boy was in a serious condition last night after he was knocked down by a bus in Co Wicklow.

The Dublin Bus vehicle struck the pedestrian at Herbert Road in Bray Co Wicklow at around 4.50pm.

The 145 was en route from the city centre to Kilmacanogue when the crash took place. There were passengers on board the bus at the time but none of them were injured.

The boy was taken to Our Ladys Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin.
