Turkey tycoon passes away on 'Turkey Day'
LONDON – British turkey tycoon Bernard Matthews has died, aged 80.
The farmer and businessman made a multi-million pound fortune through his vast poultry company and is widely credited with bringing cheap turkey meat to the masses.
The Bernard Matthews empire began with a humble £2.50 investment in 1950, 12 turkey eggs and an incubator in the heart of Norfolk, in England.
It grew into the biggest turkey processor in Europe.
Mr Matthews died on Thanksgiving Day, or Turkey Day as it is often known in the United States. – (PA)
Obama lip stitched after elbow injury
WASHINGTON – US president Barack Obama was accidentally elbowed in the face while playing basketball yesterday and received 12 stitches to his lip, the White House said.
Mr Obama, a keen basketball player, had been playing with friends and family at Fort McNair in Washington. “After being inadvertently hit with an opposing player’s elbow in the lip . . . the president received 12 stitches today,” White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said. – (Reuters)
