Woman brain damaged after car crash secures €5m settlement

One of two men charged at the weekend in connection with the activities of dissident republicans was freed on bail by the Special Criminal Court in Dublin yesterday.

A young woman who suffered severe brain damage and other injuries after an uninsured car in which she was travelling as a passenger crashed into a tree has secured more than €5 million in settlement of her High Court action.

Caroline Bogue, Coragh, Belturbet, Co Cavan, had sued her cousins Declan and Ciaran Bogue, respectively the driver and owner of the car, and the Motor Insurance Bureau of Ireland over the incident on May 1st, 2003, which occurred when she was 17.

The €5 million settlement in favour of Ms Bogue, now aged 24, was made yesterday without admission of liability.

The MIBI and Ciaran Bogue had defended the case on grounds including that Ms Bogue was aware the car had allegedly been taken by Declan Bogue without the consent of the owner and was not insured.
