Hungarian centre-right set for poll victory

BUDAPEST – Hungarians will vote on Sunday in an election that looks set to bring a landslide victory for the centre-right opposition party Fidesz, giving it a strong mandate to enact reforms and tackle the recession.

The elections on April 11th and 25th are expected to transform Hungary’s political landscape, as the Socialists who have ruled for eight years are routed and a new far-right party, Jobbik, looks set to enter parliament.

LONDON – Britain’s Duchess of Cornwall was said to be in “cheerful” spirits last night after breaking her leg during a fall while out hillwalking in Scotland.

The duchess (62) fractured her left fibula when she slipped while outdoors on Wednesday but the extent of the injury was only confirmed yesterday. A spokeswoman said: “The duchess is cheerful . . . it could be worse.”

The duchess was on her traditional Easter break at Birkhall, on Queen Elizabeth’s private Balmoral Estate in Aberdeenshire, with the Prince of Wales when the accident happened. – (PA)

New beer rule an error – probably

COPENHAGEN – Carlsberg workers walked out in protest yesterday after the Danish brewer tightened rules on workplace drinking and removed beer coolers, a company spokesman said.

The warehouse and production workers are rebelling against the company’s new alcohol policy, which allows them to drink beer only in the canteen at lunch. Previously, they could help themselves throughout the day.

The only restriction was “that you could not be drunk at work. It was up to each and everyone to be responsible,” spokesman Jens Bekke said. – (AP)
