Two men deny IRA membership
Two unemployed Dublin men have pleaded not guilty to IRA membership at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin.
Declan Geraghty (27), Downpatrick Road, Crumlin, and Stephen O’Shaughnessy (30) of Avonbeg Gardens, Tallaght each denied membership of an unlawful organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Óglaigh na hÉireann, otherwise the IRA on September 25th, 2010.
Counsel for the State, Paul Greene SC, told the court that although disclosure on prosecution materials was still being served, he anticipated the trial of the two men would begin today.
Presiding judge Mr Justice Paul Butler, sitting with Judge Alison Lindsay and Judge Flannan Brennan, remanded the two men on continuing bail to appear before the court today.
Man who was extradited from UK to appear in court over murder
A man who was extradited from the UK will appear in a Dublin court this morning in relation to the death of a man eight years ago.
The 36-year-old man was arrested at Dublin airport yesterday afternoon by gardaí investigating the death of Paul Ryan.
The arrest was made under a European Arrest Warrant.
Paul Ryan’s body was found at the side of a road at Coolderry, Birr, Co Offaly, on April 12th, 2003.
The 27-year-old from Donaghmede in Dublin had been shot in the head and his body was dumped in a nearby field.
Mr Ryan’s death was one of those examined by a cold case team which is part of the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation and was established by the Garda in 2007.
The arrested man will appear in court two at the Criminal Courts of Justice, Parkgate Street, Dublin, at 10.30am this morning.
Boy charged with selling cannabis
A teenage boy has been charged with selling herbal cannabis in an area in Dublin referred to in the case as “the cabbage patch”.
The boy (16) appeared at the Children’s Court in Dublin yesterday in connection with an alleged drug seizure at New Street, in the city’s south side, on February 28th.
Garda Seán McBride told Judge Clare Leonard the boy had been selling cannabis herb. “Six bags of cannabis herb, value €300,” the garda added.
The teenager was remanded on bail to appear again in May when he is to enter pleas.
He is charged with unlawfully possessing the drugs and possession with intent to supply to another. The judge directed disclosure of the prosecution evidence to the teenager’s solicitor and granted legal aid to the boy who is on a training course.
