Man (30) arrested in connection with death of Dundalk teenager
Gardaí investigating the death of teenager Niall Dorr (18) in Dundalk last year have arrested a man in his 30s for questioning. He is the seventh person to be arrested as part of the inquiry.
Mr Dorr, who had applied to join the Defence Forces, died on October 14th last, less than 24 hours after he was attacked by a group of people as he walked along Castle Road in Dundalk.
The inquest into his death earlier this year was told he had died from head injuries caused by blunt force trauma. After the inquest his parents renewed their appeal for anyone with information on his killing to contact gardaí.
Boy critical after pool incident
Two investigations have started into an incident involving a four-year-old Galway boy who got into difficulty in the Leisureland swimming pool in Salthill on Sunday.
Brendan Sweeney, from Castlepark, Ballybane, was pulled from the main pool and received CPR from two staff members. He was taken to hospital where his condition was described as critical last night.
The Leisureland complex, which is owned by Galway City Council, deals with an estimated 200,000 visitors every year and according to the council the complex was fully staffed on Sunday.
As well as a council investigation gardaí in Salthill are also undertaking their own investigation into the matter.
Bay of Pigs veteran to deliver speech
A veteran of the Cuban revolutionary forces who fought at the Bay of Pigs in 1961 will give an address in Cork this week to mark the 50th anniversary of the foiled US-backed invasion of the Caribbean island.
Col Victor Dreke Cruz was in charge of two companies of the Cuban army during the invasion.
He was wounded and captured briefly during the attack by Cuban emigres and mercenaries supported by the US.
Col Dreke Cruz, who will be accompanied by a group led by Cuban ambassador to Ireland Teresita Trujillio, will address a meeting at Connolly Hall in Cork at 7.30pm on Thursday, April 21st, organised by the Cork branch of the Cuba Support Group.
