Two men killed in weekend road crashes bring 2011 toll to 44
Two men were killed in road crashes in Mayo and Cavan over the weekend, bringing the number of people who have died in crashes so far this year to 44.
Gerard Finn (33), originally from Clones, Co Monaghan, with an address at The Maples, Ballyhaunis, was killed on Saturday night when the car he was driving struck a bridge on the N60 between Ballyhaunis and Claremorris, Co Mayo.
Yesterday, a 30-year-old man died when the car he and four others were travelling in hit a second vehicle at 3.30am on the N87 at Derrynacreeve Cross, Co Cavan. Gardaí said the man had been a front seat passenger. Witnesses are asked to contact any Garda station.
Campaign to stop bed closures
A campaign to prevent the closure of beds at a community hospital in west Cork saw 1,700 people taking to Clonakilty’s streets at the weekend seeking an urgent meeting with the Health Service Executive.
Campaigners are angry over the planned closure of 16 beds at the Mount Carmel hospital. Independent councillor Christopher O’Sullivan called for the new minister for health to intervene. The hospital provides services for older people including long-stay residential, convalescent and palliative care, and a range of day hospital activities.
Search for body off Kerry coast goes on
The coastguard helicopter, along with divers from the Garda Sub Aqua Unit, Civil Defence and the Ballybunion and Banna coastguard units continued their search off the coast of Kerry for the body of a missing asylum seeker, Stephen Goodson-Ukiwo (33), who was wanted for an alleged domestic murder in Tralee.
The family of the dead Polish woman, Katarzyna (Kasia) Bartkowiak (24), say the relationship had ended. Their 14-month-old son was in the house when her body was found at their home in Deerpark.
