Inquiry into fatal accident in Galway
Gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority are carrying out separate investigations following a fatal accident on a building site in the Co Galway on Tuesday.
The accident, which occurred in the village of Williamstown, claimed the life of a plasterer. It is understood Pádraig Daly (54), Knockatee, Dunmore, fell from scaffolding while working on a new development of town houses in the village.
Liberty Hall decision deferred
Siptu has postponed a decision on whether to demolish Liberty Hall, pending the completion of talks with Dublin City Council on redevelopment options.
The union executive decided at a meeting yesterday to delay making a recommendation on the future of its headquarters. While the issue has been tabled for next month's executive meeting, a decision is not now expected until the new year.
Italian strike to delay flights
Aer Lingus announced last night that passengers travelling between Dublin and Rome today will be delayed due to a general strike in Italy that will affect all transport services.
The affected flights are: flight EI402 Dublin to Rome due to depart at 7.20am and flight EI403 Rome to Dublin due to land at 14.30pm. The Dublin to Rome flight will now depart at 1pm and the Rome to Dublin flight will now land at 20.10pm.
Suzuki Swift wins best car award
The Suzuki Swift has been voted Irish Car of the Year 2006. It saw off competition from last year's winner, the Ford Focus, the Volkswagen Passat, Range Rover Sport and Citroen C4.
Challenge to Lidl store dismissed
A challenge by a local retailer to the proposed development of a Lidl store at Cherryorchard Industrial Estate Ballyfermot, Dublin, has been dismissed by the High Court. Mr Justice Michael Hanna yesterday rejected the challenge by Luke Moriarty, the operator of a Supervalu supermarket in Palmerstown, Co Dublin.
