North's 14% energy price rise criticised

Politicians, business people and homeowners in the North have strongly criticised a 14 per cent rise in electricity prices.

The Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) price hike is to take effect from July.

It came after the North's Consumer Council reported that Northern Ireland households were £160 worse off each month now compared to this time last year.

Three questioned on shooting

Gardaí investigating the shooting dead of a man in Co Monaghan last week are questioning three people about the fatal gun attack.

Darren McGrath (31), originally from the Mahon area of Cork city, was shot dead as he lay in bed at about 5am last Tuesday at a house in the Kilconny Estate in the Belturbet.

The dead man's partner was in the bedroom at the time while their 13-month old baby slept in another bedroom.

Neither was injured in the attack.

Building firm fined 250,000

An English-registered construction company has been fined €250,000 for breaching safety regulations on a building site where a Monaghan drainage pipe layer died six years ago.

Brendan Coulton, of Emyvale, died after an unsupported trench that he and members of his excavation team were digging collapsed.

Taskforce to look at port relocation

Minister for the Environment John Gormley has announced the establishment of a taskforce to advise on the future of Dublin Bay with a mandate that includes "removing" Dublin Port and seeking "sustainable redevelopment" of its 650-acre land area.

Ibec holds carbon conference

The market for low-carbon technologies will be worth at least €500 billion a year by 2050 and investors are already assessing corporate attitudes to carbon costs, the first annual Ibec carbon footprint conference heard.

The conference in Dublin's Mansion House was also told by Paul Simpson, chief executive of the low-carbon advocacy group Carbon Disclosure Project, that it was important for companies to recognise that dealing with carbon could give businesses an opportunity.
