Gardaí search for occupants of house after man shot during row
Gardaí in Galway are investigating a shooting incident, in which a man sustained bullet wounds and property was extensively damaged.
The incident is believed to have arisen as a result of a row involving Lithuanian nationals at a house in Fernhill, Athenry, on Tuesday evening. A man was treated for bullet wounds to his leg at the Galway Clinic, and was then transferred to Galway University Hospital, where his condition was described yesterday as not life threatening.
Gardaí, who were called to the house, discovered it had been damaged. Officers are trying to establish the identity of the occupants and to confirm their whereabouts. A Garda spokesman appealed for witnessed to contact Mill Street Garda station at 091-538000.
Landlords warned on 'grow houses'
Gardaí have warned landlords and letting agents to check carefully the bona fides of prospective tenants after a large cannabis "grow house" was found in a rented house in Drogheda this week.
Some 300 plants were found in the house on the southside of the town.
Supt Gerry Smith said, "This type of activity appears to becoming more prevalent and people who are renting out premises, be they owners of a property or a letting agency, need to be able to confirm the bona fides of tenants."
In relation to the Drogheda seizure, which was made on Monday, Supt Smith said while no arrests have yet been made, the investigation is continuing.
Choral festival to host free events
Cork's annual choral festival takes a recession-friendly twist this year with free entry to multiple events to cater for cash-strapped families.
The 57th festival is set to attract thousands over the May bank holiday weekend, with a line-up featuring 4,000 singers and 85 events in more than 50 venues.
The line-up of free events includes a morning concert by the Estonian Young Children's Choir of Viimsi at the Masonic Hall on Tuckey Street. The Clarion Hotel will host free afternoon sessions. Organisers are encouraging public involvement at the "Big Sing" on Saturday in City Hall.
The festival got under way yesterday and continues until Sunday.
