The question of how members of European police forces are represented at trade union level is to be studied by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions writes Tim O'Brien.
Ictu says the move is in light of the Government ban on gardaí taking industrial action. It also follows Government refusal to allow the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors to formally affiliate with Ictu.
The undertaking to study European police trade union structures came after association general secretary Joe Dirwan, president Dan Hanley and treasurer Willie Gleeson met Ictu president Jack O’Connor and general secretary David Begg yesterday. The request for the meeting was made by the association, which said it was frustrated by restrictions here.
