Disposal of commercial waste in the Dublin area could reach "crisis proportions" in the next few months, according to the Irish Business and Employers' Confederation. This follows a decision by Fingal County Council to impose limits on the amounts contractors can dump at the Balleally landfill site.

The Balleally landfill will be full in eight months at present rates of disposal, according to Dr Mary Kelly, the head of IBEC's environment unit. She added: "What image of Dublin will be portrayed when bags and bins are not collected?"

IBEC has called for a task force to deal with the city's waste disposal problems.
