It appears that summer - those three days at the beginning of May, that one day in June and the August Bank Holiday weekend - is slip, sliding away.

Met Éireann says it will continue rather cloudy today with showers in the north and west becoming more widespread and locally heavy.

Over the weekend it will remain rather cool and windy with further showers, some prolonged and heavy, and highest temperatures 14 to 16 degrees Celsius.

In terms of traffic and travel, the highlight of the weekend is the Guinness All Ireland Hurling Final at Croke Park. The match starts at 3.30 p.m. on Sunday.

Patrons are reminded that parking in the area is banned and cars parked illegally are liable to be clamped or impounded. Motors are being warned to expect delays on all routes in and around the city.

On Saturday, the Irish rugby team takes on Romania in Thomond Park in Limerick. The match begins at 1.30 p.m. and again motorists can expect delays before and after the match.

The Hibernian Coast 2 Coast Leisure Cycle takes place on Saturday and Sunday on Ireland's new "Esker Riada" heritage cycle route. The two-day event will mark the end of Hibernian National Bike Week.

In terms of air travel, there are no flight problems or cancellations to report in Dublin, Cork or Shannon Airport. Likewise, there are no problems to ferry services into and out of Cork, Rosslare, Dublin and Dun Laoighre.
