Hundreds evacuated from floods in Dublin

At least twenty families have been evacuated from their homes by gardaí and army personnel in North Dublin.

Local haulage drivers are assisting the evacuation and are ferrying people from their homes to nearby St Mary’s Community Centre.

Up to five feet of water has been reported to have flooded some homes in the area.

Massive flooding in the Church St area was caused by the Royal Canal bursting its banks.

People returning from work are being forced to wade knee-deep in water to get access to their homes. Emergency Services are not allowing people through.

Ms Emily Byrne (35) of Irvine Road, East Wall said: "at first my electricity went off, then the house started to flood and within twenty minutes the water had risen up to my knees."

Irish Coast Guard units have evacuated over 100 people their homes in the Ringsend/Irishtown area. Three of those evacuated have been hospitalised.
