More than 1,000 people attended the funeral today of former Fianna Fáil senator and businessman, Mr Eoin Ryan, including the Taoiseach Mr Ahern.

Mr Eoin Ryan: served on the Seanad for 30 years

The funeral of Mr Ryan, who was 81, and long-time liberal voice in the inner circles of Fianna Fáil, was at the Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace on Merrion Road, Dublin this afternoon.

Also attending was Táinaste Ms Harney; Labour leader Mr Ruarí Quinn; Minister for Sport, Mr Jim McDaid; and Fianna Fáil Chief Whip, Mr Seamus Brennan.

Mr Ryan., who died on Friday, was the son of a Fianna Fáil founding member, Dr James Ryan. He was also a leading businessman, principally through his chairmanship of New Ireland Assurance Company, which was co-founded by his father.

His third career was law and he was called to the Bar in 1945 and the Inner Bar in 1963. Mr Ryan served in the Seanad for 30 years.
