A woman whose ovaries were removed after her baby was safely delivered in hospital has been awarded "substantial" damages in Belfast High Court. Ms Rose McGreevy (42) from Islandbawn Drive, Antrim, alleged negligence while she was in the Waveney Hospital, Ballymena, nearly eight years ago.

She sued the Northern Health Board and the action was settled without admission of liability. Ms McGreevy was 41 weeks pregnant with her son Conor, now seven, when she was admitted to the hospital in November 1988. Her ovaries were removed for no obvious reason, it was claimed. Ms McGreevy had to receive hormone replacement therapy and suffered psychological problems.
