An infestation of body lice has forced management at Sligo General Hospital to cancel admissions to a medical ward for the second time in a month. The Irish Nurses' Organisation said there was no suggestion any industrial action would be taken, but it believed four staff members were on sick leave because of related symptoms.

The North Western Health Board said the outbreak was confined to just one of some 30 wards in the hospital. All necessary precautionary measures were in place. The first infestation occurred three weeks ago and admissions to the male medical ward were suspended for some days.
