Vatican City - A tired and hoarse Pope John Paul II, who missed saying Mass on Tuesday because he was feeling unwell, reappeared at an audience yesterday but did not read an address because of a sore throat. A priest read the Pope's address to some 10,000 people attending the audience.

The Pope's next major public appearance will be on Sunday in St Peter's, when he is to open a month-long synod of bishops from North, Central and South America.
