Spain captain Fernando Hierro has announced his retirement from international football following the World Cup.

The 34-year-old Real Madrid central defender has 88 caps, second only to former goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta, and he is Spain's all-time best goalscorer with 29.

Hierro won his first cap against Poland in 1988 and went on to play in four World Cup finals, with his best showing to date being a quarter-final appearance in the United States in 1994.
