Track your activity

You can’t move these days without bumping into a gadget to tell you how you are moving. So, if you haven’t already invested in a wearable tracker or downloaded an app into your phone to tell you how far you walk, give it a whirl.

It doesn’t have to be expensive: the humble pedometer will give you an idea of how many steps you are taking during the day. There are plenty of higher-tech options too, including devices that will also tell you how many stairs you have climbed, that will congratulate you when you hit targets and that will let you pit your activity levels against friends with devices. Some ‘wearables’ will also monitor your movements as you sleep, letting you know how many times you woke during the night (even if you didn’t realise it).

If you don’t want to buy a new device but you have a smartphone, check out the apps that are available to turn your phone into a wearable tracker as you carry it during the day.
