THE HEAD of the school of medicine at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) is to leave his post to take up a new position at Imperial College London.
Prof Dermot Kelleher is a pioneer in the field of immune response and infectious disease at TCD. He helped found the Dublin Molecular Medicine Centre in 2002 and also Opsona Therapeutics. Both companies were set up to develop treatments arising out of Trinity research.
Prof Kelleher said Imperial’s faculty of medicine “has an international reputation for excellence and a global reach that I have long admired” and he shared in its vision.
Imperial rector (vice-chancellor) Sir Keith O’Nions said Prof Kelleher’s success in translating research discoveries to frontline patients “fits perfectly with Imperial’s vision”.
Imperial is ranked third in the world for the teaching of clinical, pre-clinical and health. In the 2010 Academic Rankings of World Universities it ranked 24th overall and fifth in Europe overall and also fifth in Europe in clinical medicine and pharmacy.
Prof Kelleher takes up his position in October this year.
